Pervert's webcams spied on pupils

A PERVERTED IT consultant who set up a spy camera in the girls' toilets of a Yorkshire primary school so he could film those using it also spied on the teenage daughter of a client for five years, making secret videos of her in her bedroom.

Police were alerted when two pupils spotted something in the school toilets and the equipment was uncovered and traced to self-employed Timothy Lester Walters. Officers then discovered the covert filming of a client's daughter.

The teenager had no idea the web cam Walters had installed along with her computer had been recording clandestine footage of her between 2003 and 2008 which he downloaded remotely to his own home.

Police found hours of images of the schoolgirl including video compilations as she dressed and undressed along with encrypted files describing his fantasies about abusing girls.

Officers discovered 26,405 indecent images of children including 169 at the most serious level on his computers.

Walters, 38, then of Horsley Fold, Brighouse, was jailed for five years after he admitted six charges of voyeurism, one of taking indecent photographs, 10 of making indecent photographs and one of possessing indecent images.

Judge Scott Wolstenholme said they were serious offences which showed persistence, elaborate planning and pre-meditation.

They came to light after the camera was found at St Peter's CE School in Birstall, Batley, where his offences had caused considerable upset and stress.

He also breached the trust placed in him by the family who had asked him to install computers for their children.

The judge disqualified Walters from working with children and ordered him to register as a sex offender indefinitely.

Stephen Grattage, prosecuting, said on March 4 two pupils told the school caretaker they had seen something in the toilets.

A check revealed a video camera connected by cable to a laptop hidden in the roof using power from an emergency lighting system, connected in a dangerous way that could have caused damage to the building.

Walters had been the trusted IT consultant at the school for 10-12 years and the equipment was traced to him. It was found he had recently downloaded images on 64 occasions and taken seven indecent images. At one point he had also had a camera in a classroom but a chair had blocked its view.

Ahmed Nadim, for Walters, said he accepted he needed help for his unhealthy interest in child pornography. Fortunately he had never abused children in any direct manner.

After the case West Yorkshire Police and Kirklees Council stressed in a joint statement that Walters never had unsupervised contact with any pupils,

"Staff, pupils, parents and governors deserve great credit for the way they have carried on with business as usual, ensuring minimal disruption to school life. We will continue to support them where needed."
