IMPROVED security measures have been called for at a dam which was badly damaged during the devastating floods of June 2007.

There were fears that the dam wall at Ulley Reservoir, near Rotherham, would collapse during the floods and, since then, a huge restoration project has taken place to make the dam safe again.

However, residents have now complained that yobs have been rolling boulders down the new multi-million pound slipway.

As a result, Treeton Parish Council is set to ask Rotherham Council to install CCTV cameras on the dam bank to prevent further acts of vandalism.

Coun Richard Baker said: “Large boulders and stones are being placed on and rolled down the slipway. If this is allowed to continue it will defeat the object of building it, because they could cause an obstruction to overflow water that might threaten the safety of the dam bank.”

Members of the public were banned from Ulley Country Park and reservoir while engineers carried out the £4m restoration project on the damaged dam.

Ulley became the focus of national attention during the 2007 floods, after it became apparent the reservoir dam could not withstand the pressure of water after heavy rains.

Fire brigade pumps were commandeered from all over the country to empty water and minimise the risk of a breach, which would have flooded the nearby M1.

A third of all the high volume pumps available in the UK were in use as firefighters were pumping out 8.5 million litres of water per hour.
