Polar explorer's awards to be auctioned
The awards of a Yorkshireman who played a leading role in one of the greatest adventures in the history of British polar exploration are to be auctioned next week.
The CBE and Polar Medal of Frank Wild, Sir Ernest Shackleton's second-in-command, are expected to fetch up to 60,000 at auction at Dix Noonan Webb in London on September 18.
Wild, born in Skelton, North Yorkshire, took part in five major polar expeditions, starting with Captain Robert Scott's National Antarctic Expedition in 1901.
Wild is best remembered for his part in Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic Expedition, of 1914-17, pictured above, during which the ship Endurance and its 28-man crew were trapped by ice for ten months. When the Endurance sank, the team set off for Elephant Island and Wild, first left and inset, ensured they did not starve by shooting a sea leopard with a single bullet, providing them with nearly 1, 000lb of meat. Shackleton is second left.
Awarded his CBE in 1920, Wild emigrated to South Africa in 1923, where he died in 1939, aged 65.
