Police confirm gangland links of drive-by shooting
A YOUNG man remains in a critical condition today after a drive-by shooting in Sheffield in which another man died.
The attack, which police have confirmed is gang-related, took place in Brunswick Street in the Broomhall area of Sheffield at about 6.30pm on Wednesday.
Four men received gunshot wounds, although two are said to have sustained only minor injuries. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and the fourth remains in the city's Northern General Hospital.
This latest killing brings the total number of gang-related murders in Sheffield to eight since 1999.
Chief Superintendent Paul Broadbent, South Yorkshire Police's district commander for the city of Sheffield, said: "This was a targeted attack involving two small groups of people who happened to be in the Broomhall area.
"We believe this was gang-related but we are in the very early stages of the investigation and there is much to do and much still to come out.
"During the attack at least one firearm was discharged and a young adult male received fatal shot injuries. One other young adult make received serious injuries and is still in the Northern General Hospital. Two other young adult males received minor injuries."
Mr Broadbent confirmed the two groups of men involved were known to the police, and he added they are involved in criminal activity.
He added: "As a result of that, one lad has lost his life. The issue is around being involved in criminality and running the risk of being killed or being one of the aggressors.
"Cordons are still in place and we have much work to do forensically, gathering evidence and taking statements from people."
Anyone with any information on the shooting should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
