Police told to act over breaches in safety rules
HUMBERSIDE Police has been told to improve the safety of its employees and contractors after it was found to have made five breaches of health and safety regulations.
Five formal improvement notices have been served on the chief constable and force watchdog, Humberside Police Authority, following an inspection by the Health and Safety Executive in April.
Improvement notices are issued when an inspector believes the law has been broken and it is likely it will continue to be.
The contraventions include:
n Failure to properly assess the risks to staff of violence and aggression on the main desk at Scunthorpe Police Station;
n Failure to produce a written plan to manage the risks associated with asbestos found on police premises;
n Failure to properly manage the health and safety of contractors;
n Failure to reduce the risk of injury to employees from "hazardous moving and handling activities".
The force has been given six months to address the breaches, and nine months to comply with a failure carry out proper risk assessments at a non-operational level across the force.
The force is to be given verbal recommendations to carry out further improvements this week.
A health and safety manager has been appointed and will be joined by a co-ordinator and administration assistant.
Key personnel have also joined a health and safety improvement group.
Failure to adequately respond to the improvement notices could see the authority and Chief Constable Tim Hollis prosecuted.
Details of the inspection and the force's plans to improve are contained in a report to the authority tomorrow .
