Portrait gives insight into Duchess's charm
This "striking image" of the Duchess of Cornwall will go on display to the public for the first time this week.
The Prince of Wales lent the portrait, which normally hangs in Clarence House, to the annual exhibition of the
Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
The Duchess made several sittings for the artist, Susan Crawford, in September, October and November last year.
Crawford, who specialises in horses as well as portraiture, said: "Having known the Duchess and her family for many years, I wanted to bring out the informal side of her splendid character, her adaptability and above all her sense of humour.
"She inherited many of these qualities from her dearly loved late father, Bruce Shand, of whom I was especially fond."
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said: "There's a charm in this portrait, also a humanity and a sense of humour that gives us an insight into the true character of the Duchess. It's a striking image."
The oil on canvas will go on display at the Mall Galleries
in central London from May 7 to 23.
