Posties solve map address riddle
POSTMEN used their map-reading expertise to deliver a letter that was simply marked with a name and a drawing.
A map of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset was sketched on the envelope with a dot drawn in north Cornwall and an arrow saying "Somewhere Here".
The postal workers in Bude, north Cornwall, managed to pinpoint the right address and deliver the letter to recipient Peter O'Leary.
The letter was from a long-lost work colleague who was trying to get back in touch, but, sadly for Mr O'Leary, the sender failed to enclose his own address for a reply.
Bude's delivery office manager Andrew Lake said it was the first time he had ever seen someone use a map instead of an address and praised postmen who did the detective work.
He said posties managed to work out from the map the intended address was in Bude and then they asked each other if anyone recognised the name Peter O'Leary.
One realised Mr O'Leary lived on his round and said the customer was astounded when he handed over the letter.
"The customer was very impressed indeed and we were delighted to be able to deliver the item," said Mr Lake.
"I have come across vague addresses on letters such as the house two doors down from the church, but never a map.
"It was a bit like the needle in a haystack."
