Primary school league tables published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families this morning show schools' test scores falling in nine of 13 Yorkshire councils.

The results show how Year Six pupils performed in their Key Stage Two standards assessment tests in the core subjects of English, maths and science this year.

The tables reveal that Yorkshire has four councils among the worst 20 performing authorities in the country.

Rotherham has the lowest level of pupils making the grade in the region, around a quarter of pupils not reaching the set standard in English or maths.

It is followed by Wakefield, Sheffield and Bradford, all in the bottom 20 in a national table of education authorities and each with 24 per cent of pupils not achieving level four results in either English or maths.

Bradford is one of only two authorities in the county to achieve an improved average test score this year, along with Hull.

The publication today comes as a leading think-tank warns England's education system is lagging behind other countries.

A report by Reform calls for every 16-year-old to be required to study a core of five academic GCSEs, including English, maths, sciences, foreign languages and history or geography.
