Promoting cycling ‘could help pull in more tourists’
COUNCIL leaders claim to be making “rapid progress” in promoting the Bradford area as a cycle-friendly place for commuters and tourists.
Councillors will look at how cycling is being promoted when they discuss a cycling strategy being presented to the authority’s Executive on Friday February 10.
The strategy is the product of a collaboration between a range of cycling organisations, local businesses, and members of the public as well as the Council, who form the ‘Cycle Bradford’ Partnership.
The plan sets out action points to get more people out cycling by improving cycling infrastructure, promoting training, staging events and gathering community support.
Councillor David Green, executive member for regeneration and the economy, said: “Although it is important that we promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transport, we also see cycling as a great leisure and sporting activity that can boost people’s health and this strategy reflects those benefits.”
The council says that the cycling strategy is closely aligned and will help to deliver the aims of the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan 2011-26 and the recently launched ‘Active Bradford’ Sport and Physical Activity Strategy.
John Dennis, chairman of Cycle Bradford, said: “This is a truly partnership-led strategy, reflecting and supporting the many diverse aspects of cycling that already take place right across the district.
“It’s great to have such a strategy in Bradford.”
A council spokesman said: “The successful bid to the Government’s Sustainable Transport Fund will provide new cycle routes, training and promotions over the next few years.
“Bradford Council will be working with the charity Sustrans and other partners to improve nearly £4m of cycle routes in the district, for example the completion of Connect 2 project in the Manchester Road area which will see the installation of a new bridge; the creation of a mountain biking hub at St Ives estate in Bingley and improving the Canal Road corridor for cyclists.”
The council works with partners including British Cycling to encourage participation.
The strategy is expected to be endorsed on February 10.
