Quaker centre restored after £60,000 drive
A QUAKER Meeting House that has been in continuous use as a place of worship since it was founded in 1691 has been restored at a cost of £60,000.
Kirkbymoorside Meeting House in West End was established after the founder of the Quaker movement, George Fox, visited the area.
Its treasurer, Priscilla Webster, says it is the only meeting house in North Yorkshire to have been in continuous use as a place of worship.
The listed building needed a new roof, heating system, porchway, kitchen, access for disabled people, library and access to the gallery. Dry rot was also found.
The Quakers launched an appeal for funds and held events including garden parties, poetry evenings, concerts and a plant sale. A formal re-opening is planned later this year.
