Railway station facelift
PLANS for a £2.5m revamp of Rotherham's railway station have been unveiled by transport chiefs who say the new facilities will be a fantastic improvement on the current arrangements.
Architects Aedas have been chosen to draw up the scheme which will include a new passenger lounge, retail space and a travel information centre.
The scheme will be funded by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Rotherham Council and regional development agency Yorkshire Forward. Work is expected to start in 2009.
Melanie Del Rossi from the transport executive said: "The catalyst for change in Rotherham has been Yorkshire Forward's Urban Renaissance Programme, which has set out a new agenda for the future of the region's towns.
"Developing the railway station is going to be an important part of Rotherham's regeneration."
Future work will include lifts to the platforms, dualling track access to increase train frequency and lengthening the platforms.
