Rainbow artwork unveiled at library and arts centre

A “VIBRANT and original” piece of art, created by children in Rotherham, has been unveiled in the town to mark lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history month.

Entitled Rotherham’s Rainbow Road the 10-metre-long artwork is currently on display in the top corridor of the Rotherham Library and Arts Centre and will remain there throughout March.

A spokesman for Rotherham Council said of the piece: “It was created by children and young people at last September’s Rotherham Show and is part of a display that also includes a timeline of significant events for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, both nationally and in Rotherham.

“It supports the sporting theme of this year’s national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history month by featuring a few of the many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sporting celebrities, some of whom have achieved worldwide fame for their Olympic success.”

A new network, called TranSupport, has also been established for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Rotherham, along with their families and friends.

The spokesman added: “TranSupport is a local group that supports transgendered people in Rotherham and the surrounding area and aims to provide practical support to all trans people, their families and friends.

“It is also a source of information and guidance for anyone interested in transgender issues.”
