Rapist convicted while on the run
POLICE in Yorkshire are appealing for help in tracing a rapist who went on the run after abusing young girls.
Joseph Chapman failed to show up at court for his trial on Monday
and police are now warning people not to challenge him after he was given a 16-year-jail sentence today for 12 offences.
The 64-year-old, also known as Thomas Courtie, was meant to stand trial at Hull Crown Court and the judge chose to start it in his absence.
He was convicted of three counts of rape of a female under 16, seven counts of indecent assault against a girl under 14, and two counts of gross indecency with a girl under 16.
It is believed Chapman left his home address in Hull, East Yorks at around 8.20am on the morning of his trial. Attempts by police to locate him have been unsuccessful so far.
He is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall with a stocky build. He is bald, has green eyes and speaks with a Liverpool accent. Officers believe he may have a two to three week grey/white coloured beard.
Det Con Adrian Adamson, of Humberside Police's Public Protection Unit, said: "Mr Chapman offended against children over a substantial period. This man groomed and threatened his victims.
"Mr Chapman did not face up to his victims in court and his current whereabouts are unknown."
Anyone who knows of his whereabouts is urged to contact police on 0845 60 60 222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
