Reach for the sky: wartime legends taking flight

TWO of the iconic aircraft from the Second World War will flypast over the Yorkshire Air Museum this weekend as celebrations begin for the 65th anniversary of the Dambuster Raid.

The Lancaster bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is expected at the former Second World War airfield at Elvington, near York, on Saturday, and the Dakota transport aircraft on Sunday.

The museum is getting ready to welcome enthusiasts to this weekend's Battlegroup North and Military Wheels and Wings Show, which weaves three different but complementary themes into one event.

The Yorkshire Military Vehicle Trust has 200 historic vehicles booked into the show from across the region - making it the biggest gathering of its type in the North of England. The line up will include tanks, half-tracks, trucks and Jeeps.

Visitors will be enthralled at the precision model wargaming aspect of the show, as enthusiasts stage some demonstration and participation games. Many are based on real battle scenarios.

In addition to the Yorkshire Air Museum's own East Yorkshire Regiment Living History Group there will be a number of re-enactment teams attending. They include the Normandy Arnhem Society from Thirsk, the Pontefract Home Guard, the 307th Medical Company from Bolton, Lancashire; with the Germans being supplied by the Frontline Association from Hull.

A novel display is the 4th Indian Division Re-enactment group from Stanley, County Durham, with their Air Observational Post, which will include a static exhibit of a Second World War Auster aircraft.

Museum spokesman, Ian Richardson, said: "We are absolutely delighted with this show of support for the event from all across the region and beyond. It will be fantastic to see the Lancaster and Dakota over the skies of Elvington in what will be their only appearances here this year."

The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is 7 adult, 5 senior citizen and 4 for children. Car parking is free.
