Recent arrivals win pub award
Brian Dooks A WENSLEYDALE public house run by two relative newcomers to the licensed trade has been named Pub of the Year for 2006 by Camra – the Campaign for Real Ale.
The award has been given to the Cross Keys at Bellerby, near Leyburn, by Camra's north-west Yorkshire branch, which covers Wensleydale, Swaledale, Richmond, North-allerton and Thirsk.
Licensees Tammy and Rod Marriott received the award for their strong commitment to traditional cask beer served to a consistently high quality.
Chairman of Camra north-west Yorkshire Vince Rutland praised the couple for their achievement.
"Tammy and Rod have worked wonders with the Cross Keys," he said.
"It's a great example of a community pub that is a real asset to the village but welcomes visitors equally well."
He added: "Their achievement is particularly remarkable as the pair have only been in the licensed trade for a couple of years."
Mr Marriott said: "It's a great honour to have been chosen as the area's Camra Pub of the Year 2006, especially when there are lots of other great pubs in the region."
Camra members made a second award last night when they named the Bridge Inn at Grinton, near Reeth, as the area's Pub of the Season for Spring 2006.
