Region wins share of new youth centres to help cut social turmoil

NEARLY £13m in Government funding was announced yesterday to deliver youth centres in the region with the developments planned to help address some of the nation's biggest social problems.

Ministers have earmarked 31m to develop eight new youth centres across England, with three of the schemes in the region. Centres will be built in Scarborough, Halifax and Hull to provide young people with access to a host of activities as well as key support services.

The new schemes will offer advice services to help counter teenage pregnancies, bullying and mental health issues, as well as offering guidance on pursuing careers and job-hunting.

Minister for Yorkshire Rosie Winterton said: "These world-class facilities will offer a range of new opportunities for young people and be a major boost now, and in the future, to the region's economy.

"The Government is committed to backing young Britain and that means giving young people the help, skills and encouragement they need to fulfil their potential and to lead productive lives."

The cash for the eight schemes has been made available through the myplace project, a 270m programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and delivered by the Big Lottery Fund.

The Scarborough initiative, which is called The Street and is being led by Coast and Moors Voluntary Action, has secured nearly 4m in funding for a development in Dean Road.

The centre will offer activities including street dance, music and arts as well as a mini-cinema and Friday night concerts. The facilities will be targeted at young people aged between 13 and 19 from some of the region's most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

A 3.8m grant has also been provided for The Square Chapel Trust's Orangebox Young People's Centre in Halifax, which will be next to the 18th century Grade I listed Piece Hall.

The new hub will provide activities ranging from music to dance and drama, and support services to address bullying and mental health.

Hull Council has received a 5m grant for a new city centre scheme next year. A five-storey building will also provide health services and support from teenage pregnancy to careers.
