Region set to house bank's biggest data site

HSBC is planning to build its biggest data centre in the world at a business park on the edge of York, providing a boost for the region's building industry.

The world's largest bank is seeking planning permission for the 300m centre at Monks Cross. It would store and process customer and product information from throughout the world.

The bank has made an application to York Council to develop a 30-acre site south of Huntington Stadium and Waterworld.

It would be built on part of the Vangarde business park, which is two miles outside the city centre. HSBC has taken out an option with Oakgate (Monks Cross) Ltd for the land.

The council is expected to make a decision on the application early in the New Year.

In a statement the company said: "If planning consent is granted, HSBC will then make a final decision on the project in 2009.

"If the data centre progresses, this would represent the largest single inward investment to York in the city's history.

"Made at a critical time in the current economic cycle, this would boost the local economy and position the city as a major node in a global network.

"When completed, the York site will be paired with another data centre in Yorkshire and will be the largest and most important HSBC data centre facility in the world. The other pairs are in Hong Kong, Chicago and Mexico City."

If approved, the 325,000sq ft development is expected to take two years to build. It would generate up to 2,000 construction and fitting out jobs and then employ about 100 staff.
