Repair scheme for historic walls set to be extended

York’s medieval walls are set to be preserved by the city council for at least five years under the authority’s maintenance scheme as part of the 2012-2014 budget proposals.

Under plans for York Council’s capital budget, members will consider whether to extend the rolling repair programme for a further two years – adding £180,000 to support the repair work in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Council leader James Alexander said: “The city walls are a unique and highly visual reminder of York’s colourful heritage.

“It’s vital that work to repair and restore the walls continues, so we can protect them for future generations to enjoy.”

The move is being backed by The Friends of York Walls, a voluntary group set up to represent the interests of the city’s distinctive heritage.

Keith Myers, chairman of the Friends, said: “We are very pleased that the council can continue this important work. The walls are a unique asset and deserve to be maintained to the highest level.”

The group is currently leading another major campaign to restore the Fishergate Postern Tower.

An innovative fundraising scheme, which allows people to sponsor a stone on the ancient building for £20, has raised over £2,000 since it was launched last month.
