Residents asked for views over flooding
RESIDENTS living near Wyke Beck in East Leeds are being urged to find out more about plans to tackle flooding
There have been a series of serious floods near the stream on the Dunhill estate in Halton, Leeds, and a task group has been set up to look at how to manage the problem.
Environment Agency project manager John Woods said: "We are looking at a range of options which includes widening the channel, creating flood storage upstream or building new flood walls.
"The flood problems along Wyke Beck are very complex and we would like as many people to come along to our drop-in to hear our plans and give us some feedback on the various options."
Wyke Beck is a tributary of the River Aire and cuts through the eastern suburbs of Leeds. The area is heavily built-up which has left the stream prone to flooding from surface water run-off, and drains backing up.
The stream is crossed by several bridges which restrict the flow during heavy storms and can cause blockages.
In addition, the Wyke Beck responds very quickly during a localised storm which makes it more difficult for Environment Agency officers to anticipate problems.
The Dunhills Task Group, which includes residents and officers from the Environment Agency and Leeds City Council, are hosting a community session for residents tomorrow at the Corpus Christi Club, Halton Moor Avenue, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
Mr Woods added: "The best option for work on the beck is one which residents have chosen."
Over the past six weeks, the Dunhills Task Group has looked at the causes of the flooding and the options for managing it.
It wants to open the consultation process to the rest of the community before a scheme is chose and is urging people to attend tomorrow's session.
People wanting to attend are asked to confirm attendance with Mr Woods on 0113 213 4910.
