Residents win £25,000 grant to save struggling village hall

Villagers in Hotham have won grants to fund improvements to their dilapidated 46-year-old village hall.

Residents of the East Yorkshire village got £15,000 from not-for-profit business Waste Recycling Environmental and £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The hall will benefit from new heating and insulation systems, improvements to the cloakrooms, a new kitchen, and a complete redecoration once the work is complete.

Chairman of the Village Hall Committee Mike Auton said: “The use of the hall has reduced in recent years, particularly in the winter months, as it’s been difficult to get the hall warm enough to produce a comfortable environment.”

“Not only was there a comfort issue with the temperature of the hall, but the committee also faced a financial challenge – heating expenses that were exceeding the revenue generated. Clearly something had to be done to avoid the Hall having to be closed.”

One of the conditions of the grant applications required the Village Hall Committee to raise funds to cover the balance of the costs . Through events including a Hog Roast at Hotham Hall, villagers raised £8,000 for the refurbishment project.

Work will commence towards the end of January and should be complete in April.
