Restaurant helps charity to honour family links to sea
FISHING is in James Goacher's blood.
His links to Bridlington and Hull stretch back over four generations and he will create 15 new jobs on Thursday when he opens a new restaurant in Hull's iconic St Stephen's shopping centre.
Mr Goacher opened his first fish restaurant, Naked Fish, in Bridlington less than five years ago and his latest venture, also named Naked Fish, will be dedicated to Hull's fishing heritage.
Tomorrow lunchtime, he will be joined by representatives of Hull's fishing heritage charity STAND who are organising a permanent memorial to the city's fisherman lost at sea.
They also operate Hull's last sidewinder trawler Arctic Corsair as a museum to the fishing industry and Mr Goacher's great uncle was its chief engineer.
Mr Goacher is donating a pound from every meal sold on his official opening day to the fishermen's charity and will permanently have a 'STAND Special' fish and chips dish which includes a 1 donation to STAND.
He had hoped to open Naked Fish over two weeks ago but the company supplying his sophisticated till and ordering system went out of business.
St Stephen's helped him find an alternative supplier and the new system was installed yesterday in time for the opening.
The restaurant not only serves traditional fish and chips, (including a secret batter recipe), but also offers a wide range of fish dishes, 'surf and turf' and steak.
Mr Goacher said: "This is a big move for us and it's vital we have excellent staff in the kitchen and front of house to maintain the high standards we've created in Bridlington.''
The fully-licensed fish restaurant will be on the top floor of St Stephen's next to Reel cinema and seat around 100 diners offering a wide range of fresh fish and shellfish dishes as well as some meat and vegetarian options.
Mr Goacher is passionate about his product and sources much of his fish and shellfish directly from the boats at Bridlington harbour and also buys at Hull's Fishgate, continuing a family tradition of working in the industry.
He added: "I started working full time for my father who was a fish merchant when I left school at 15.
"I ran a fish and chip shop, which I named after my son Merlin, before opening Naked Fish.''
