Reunion of Land Girls could be the last...

A REUNION of Land Girls being held this week an East Yorkshire town could be the last.

Since 1964 Eileen Medforth has been organising the get togethers for women who took part in the Women's Land Army.

But Mrs Medforth, 85, said "Every year I've said it's the last but this year I definitely think it is."

Mrs Medforth, of Shiptonthorpe, said her experiences working on the land were the "happiest days of her life."

She joined the Land Army in 1940 from having worked in an office in Hull, staying at a hostel in Market Weighton, where the women were contracted to do seasonal work on local farms.

She then moved to Manor Farm, Market Weighton, eventually marrying in 1946, and only moving on in 1949.

She said: "It was different I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I'm positive it did all us people who lived in towns good.

"I used to drive the tractor and do everything the men used to do.

"When I lived in Market Weighton and had a bigger house we had up to 103, but as we've got older people have died or become incapacitated.

"But we've still for two ladies coming from Coventry and others from York, Wetherby and Bridlington and Stockton."

Around 40 people are due to attend a buffet meal being held at Market Weighton Community Hall this Friday at noon.

She said: "It's open to anybody. I have always said anyone who was in the Land Army is welcome to come."

It was only last year that the thousands of women who worked in the WLA and the Women's Timber Corps, nicknamed the Lumber Jills, were recognised for their efforts with a commemorative badge.

For tickets, which cost 10 and include a glass of wine call Mrs Medforth on 01430 872431.
