RL player banned by Asbo from home town pubs
Robert Sutcliffe A RUGBY league star could face jail if he enters any licensed premises in Castleford after he received a two-year Asbo banning him from every pub in his home town.
Wayne McHugh's legendary off-field antics led to a ban three years ago by 46 licensees under the town's pubwatch scheme.
But the Featherstone Rovers player flouted it and now Pontefract magistrates have granted an order that could lead to him being jailed if he is found drunk in any public place in the Wakefield district or trying to enter any licensed premises in a defined area of Castleford.
PC Dave Malik, licensing officer for Wakefield district, said: "He has been a thorn in the side of licensed premises in Castleford for quite some time. He has been a nuisance to a number of licensees by constantly trying to breach his pubwatch ban, fighting in the town centre and in general making a real nuisance of himself.
"If he goes in a pub in the town centre it is an arrestable offence, and like all anti-social behaviour orders is punishable with imprisonment or fine."
The two-year Asbo also means that McHugh, 26, a former star player for Castleford club Redhill and the Great Britain side, must not act in a threatening, abusive or insulting manner anywhere in England and Wales.
The police request for an Asbo comes after McHugh pleaded guilty to assault at the Pontefract court earlier this month.
He was ordered to pay 500 compensation and handed a community order with supervision order and told to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community.
Only last month he was banned from driving for two years at the same court for driving without insurance.
Rovers first team coach David Hobbs said: ''I think Wayne McHugh has been dealt with in the proper channels. Wayne McHugh has overstepped the mark. However, his conduct within the club has been exemplary while he has been with us. We have been fully informed by Wayne of what has been going off and he will serve his punishment."
