Role for Yorkshire as top film talent gets a royal opportunity

SCENES for a new film starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and a roll call of British acting talent are to be shot in Bradford.

Filming is taking place at a number of locations across England including the Bradford Bulls Stadium, at Odsal, and other locations in the region may also be used.

The King's Speech, which also stars Sir Michael Gambon, Timothy Spall, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce and Jennifer Ehle, who starred with Firth in the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, is a drama about George VI's struggles to overcome his stammer.

Filming began last week and will take place at various locations in England including Ely Cathedral and Battersea Power Station.

The film tells the true story of the relationship between England's reluctant King, George VI, plagued by a nervous stammer, and the irreverent Australian speech therapist who helped him.

It is based on the true story of the present Queen's father and his friendship with speech therapist Lionel Logue.

As the second son of George V, Prince Albert "Bertie" was not expected to ascend to the throne, but when his brother Edward chose to abdicate to marry Wallis Simpson, he was thrust into the spotlight and engaged Logue, who helped him find a voice to lead the nation.

Firth stars as Prince Albert, alongside Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue. Helena Bonham Carter will play his wife, the former Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later the Queen Mother), Jennifer Ehle plays Logue's wife Myrtle, Guy Pearce the abdicating King Edward VIII, Derek Jacobi the Archbishop of Canterbury, Timothy Spall Winston Churchill and Sir Michael Gambon King George V.

Screen Yorkshire, a regional screen agency responsible for supporting the region's film, television, games and interactive media sector, has helped find locations for The King's Speech and has provided crew.
