Police said fire crews managed to rescue a couple in their 70s from the 4x4 and ambulance crews took them to Dewsbury and District Hospital.

Their injuries were not thought to be serious. The woman suffered a minor leg injury.

The crash led to long tailbacks of queuing traffic from the Chain Bar area of Bradford, where the M606 motorway joins the M62. The accident happened just before noon.

The Highways Agency said the accident was causing delays of 50 minutes to motorists but that normal traffic conditions were expected later today.
