Sailor airlifted to hospital
A SAILOR had to be airlifted to hospital from a ship off the Yorkshire Coast after an accident on board involving a grinding machine.
The man suffered serious facial injuries in the incident as the Dutch flagged Zeeland cargo vessel was passing Withernsea.
The 32-year-old was said to have been struck in the face three times by the machinery around 8.45am on Saturday.
Humber Coastguard scrambled a Sea King Helicopter from RAF Leconfield, near Beverley, which flew the casualty to Hull Royal Infirmary, where a surgical team was on stand by.
The coastguard said the sailor's condition was not life-threatening but they needed to get him to the hospital as soon as possible.
His injuries were very painful and the helicopter was chosen rather than the lifeboat to ensure he was treated quickly, a spokesman added.
The Zeeland was heading for the Humber Estuary at the time of the accident and was able to resume her journey shortly afterwards.
