Scampi firm in move to save future fish stocks

WHITBY Seafoods is working to ensure scampi stays in the High Street by having its fishing operation fully checked out for the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard.

If successful, it will allow the North Yorkshire business, which employs around 120 people, to display the MSC eco-label on all its scampi products.

Edward Whittle, supply chain director of Whitby Seafoods, said: "MSC certification is an important part of our future and we are determined to get our fishery certified.

"We recognise our customers want to see MSC eco-labelled scampi and langoustine to help them make better choices. Furthermore, by working together with the MSC we are confident we can ensure that the seafood products we supply will be sustainable in the future."

Rupert Howes, Chief Executive of the MSC, added: "It is great to see seafood processors like Whitby Seafoods taking such an active role in promoting seafood sustainability."

Whitby Seafoods's fleet includes Success 3, Prevail, Renown, Grenaa Star and Kristanjo as well as other visiting vessels fishing out of Whitby and North Shields.
