Scheme for former maggot farm backed
Robert Sutcliffe PLANS to demolish a former maggot farm so waste material can be composted in a new building are a step closer.
Calderdale Council planning officers are recommending approval of the controversial proposals, at Sharneyford Works, Bacup Road, Todmorden, which are fiercely opposed by local action groups with almost 500 letters of objection received.
Residents fear the plans will lead to increased traffic in the Bacup Road area but a report by officers say the number of lorries visiting the site each day would be just 20 – an increase of only three to five per cent.
The report adds that 70 letters have been received in support of the plans, which, it says, aim to transform one of Calderdale's major gateway sites.
Supporters also say the multi-million pound scheme by Harlequin Composting would have "significant social and environmental benefits and alleviate the flood threat to the Upper Calder Valley".
The backers claim the plans would help the council in meeting future recycling targets – at the moment there are no composting facilities in the district.
Members of Calderdale's planning committee will decide the issue on Tuesday at Halifax Town Hall.
