Schools try for solar power funding
CHILDREN and teachers at two schools have made a bid to the Government for money to equip their buildings with environmentally-friendly solar panels.
Volunteers from Friends of the Earth have helped Thurlstone Primary School and Millhouse Primary School in Penistone with the idea.
If the schemes are approved, both schools could be awarded 20,000 from the Government's Low Carbon Buildings project to install the panels.
Rebecca Webb, headteacher at Thurlstone Primary School, said: "The children are keen to reduce our carbon emissions and have been researching ways of practically addressing the issues.
"Working with Friends of the Earth is an exciting development which will help put our plans into action.
"We believe that we have a duty to educate our children to make them environmentally aware because they can make a difference now and they will be the policy makers of the future."
Penistone Friends of the Earth has lobbied for the planned Penistone Grammar School to adopt renewable energy policy and have zero carbon emissions.
Spokesman Rachel Gibbons said: "We were very impressed at how much environmental awareness there already is in our schools.
"We will be working with many local schools over the next few months to help raise the children's awareness of energy and climate change."
