Screen pedigree and falcons included in historic mill's price

An historic mill famed for its starring role on the big and small screen is to go under the hammer next week.

Dalton Mills in Keighley town centre will be up for sale at a pre-Christmas property auction in London on Wednesday.

The Grade II listed former textile mill is going under the hammer with King Sturge.

A piece of Yorkshire's architectural heritage, the partially restored 19th century mill is also renowned for its starring roles as Marlborough Mills in the BBC adaptation of North and South, as the set of BBC 1 show Sunday Life, in a host of Bollywood films and most recently as a backdrop for Bedlam, a forthcoming drama series featuring Will Young.

The landmark will be auctioned in two separate lots, with a total guide price of 1,375,000.

After Salts Mill in Saltaire and Manningham Mills in Bradford, Dalton Mills is considered the most architecturally important mill in the region.

Once the largest employer in Keighley, providing an income for more than 1,000 workers in its heyday, the mill has a rich and fascinating history dating back 137 years.

Parts of the complex, The Clock Tower and Riverside have been converted into a business park over the last few years by the mill's developer Magna Holdings, housing tenants from wind turbine designers to screen and digital printers.

The landmark clock has also been restored to its former working glory.

Martin Whiteley, managing director of Magna Holdings, said: "In the past four years since we acquired Dalton Mills we have transformed the Clock Tower and Riverside into a thriving business community and we are proud of what we've achieved and feel privileged to have been involved with such a unique building.

"Now we're looking for someone who has the capacity to take Dalton Mills on to the next stage, finding a use that makes the best of its architecture and heritage and creates something sustainable for the future. The mill has the potential to be a fantastic asset both to its next owners and to Keighley and the Airedale district as a whole."

Dalton Mills is also home to some more unusual tenants – a pair of peregrine falcons who have made their home in one of its towers. The falcons, which have been nesting and raising chicks at the top of the tower for five years, have become a popular sight around the mill.
