Sculptures go down to the wire
Recycled telephone wires reclaimed from scrapyards have been transformed into bird sculptures for an exhibition at a North Yorkshire art gallery.
The artwork of Celia Smith has gone on show at the Lund Gallery, which is based in converted dairy buildings on a smallholding on the outskirts of Easingwold to the north of York.
She has created the sculptures in her rural studio in Gloucestershire after drawing inspiration from guinea fowl, geese and chickens to the wild birds of the surrounding countryside, such as moorhens and rooks.
The Lund Gallery's summer show, which will run until September 5, is also featuring the work of potter Chris Lewis, who is from East Sussex and has travelled throughout Africa, Asia and America to learn skills from native crafts people. Gallery owner Debbie Loane, a landscape artist who opened the venue in September 2005, said: "This show is sure to appeal to those who are interested in the traditional skills combined with innovation involved in the making of a truly original and beautiful piece of craft work."
