See you next year, says champion Highland breeder, 83
CHAMPION Highland cattle breeder Anne Barugh is already planning for next year's Show after another successful visit in which she took both breed and female champion.
At 83 she is undaunted by another winter looking after her fold of 17 cows at home in Bridlington – on her own, and even seemed surprised she should do anything else.
"I go out on my quad bike every morning and do my rounds," said Miss Barugh, who keeps them on a total of 22 acres of land and does not entertain any thoughts of retiring.
"That's what I get up for in the morning," she said of her pedigree fold, adding that they were not difficult to look after as they spent all their time outdoors.
She does have a part time stockman, Eric Robson, of Burton Agnes, a farmer turned civil engineer who has been with her for 20 years and who accompanies her to the Show.
"Hopefully, I'll be back next year with her, when she is a three-year-old ," she said of her champion Bachy Mor, who took top honours at Miss Barugh's 30th Great Yorkshire where she has been showing from the first year she kept the breed.
Her love of Highland cattle began when she worked as manageress of an hotel in Perthshire 40 years ago where they also kept a fold of them.
"They were lovely, and I decided I wanted some I liked them so much. I started with one that I bought at market and then drove all the way Bridlington pulling a trailer, which I'd never done before.
"I did have some difficulty getting it up Sutton Bank," she admitted.
The fold of 17 has been built up over the years. She also had a bull who was a champion, and sold him to the Queen. He produced nine breed champions for her.
Born and bred in Bridlington, Miss Barugh is not a farmer by upbringing – although her sister bred ponies and Charolais cattle in the resort – and before turning to Highland cattle had a varied career.
She trained at domestic
science college in Edinburgh before joining BOAC, the airline which preceded BA, as an air stewardess for 10 years and
then going on to work in Scotland.
In 1940 she went to Queen Margaret's School, near York which was based at Castle Howard during the Second World War.
It was a memorable time for her as in her first term the dome of the stately home, near Malton, caught fire.
