Self-starters put on right course for business

A BUSINESS scheme led by a West Yorkshire council is helping people to achieve success, by providing them with the confidence to start out on their own.

The Silver Entrepreneurs Scheme advises people aged 40 to 50-plus about becoming self-employed, through a series of information events, workshops and business support.

The free workshops run by Calderdale Council are available to all and are held over two days, with seminars on how to form business plans, accounting, networking skills and confidence building.

Michael Ward, of Southowram, retired from the Army after 23 years hoping to start his own property development business. He took part in the scheme last year and saw it is an opportunity to get ideas and inspiration from others in the group, as well as through the seminars.

"After attending the workshops I was brimming with ideas and just couldn't wait to get started. The team's dedication was outstanding and I am still in regular contact with them" said Mr Ward.

His newly formed company also benefited from a Business Start Up Grant which he used to buy a computer, printer and internet connection.

Mr Ward is now busy building up his portfolio of clients and is grateful for all the help he received in starting up his company.

He said: "My message to people is: 'Don't be scared, do your research and speak to the people that know".

Business enterprise officer Eric Binns said "Calderdale Council is keen to encourage and advise adults of any age to make the most of their skills and experience by considering self-employment as an option.

"Older entrepreneurs may find starting a business easier. They tend to have more experience to draw from, fewer distractions and more assets to finance a business.

"They decide to become self-employed for a variety of reasons: to improve their quality of life, take control of their own employment destiny or fulfill a lifelong ambition."
