Service personnel honoured as restored war memorial rededicated
THE dead of two world wars and soldiers currently serving abroad were remembered in a Leeds suburb during a rededication ceremony for a restored war memorial.
The Meanwood community rallied round to restore the local war memorial.
Cynthia Ruston, chairman of the Meanwood Valley Partnership, explained: "The war memorial is an important feature in Meanwood, which was gradually deteriorating. A structural survey had identified a number of repairs that needed to be made.
"With grants from the War Memorials Trust and Green Leeds we were able to obtain the services of expert restorers to make the necessary repairs."
Members of the Meanwood Village Association paid for a landscape architect to redesign the garden around the memorial, with funding for the landscaping coming from Leeds Council.
The local community also raised 2,800 for the Help for Heroes charity which is helping soldiers returning from Afghanistan.
On Saturday a rededication service was led by the Right Reverend James Bell, Bishop of Knaresborough. Also in attendance were the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Judith Elliott, local councillors and members of the Royal British Legion.
