Premier Farnell - The electronics distributor is investing 300,000 in energy efficiency and waste projects worldwide, resulting in a 21 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.

Platinum Print - The Harrogate-based printing company recycles all its waste, uses vegetable-based inks instead of oil-based materials, promotes the use of recycled paper and encourages customers to order online.

Waterton Park Hotel and Walton Hall - Situated in the grounds of the world's first nature reserve, in Wakefield, and heated by the UK's largest water source heat pump. Carbon emissions have been cut by 198,000 tonnes a year.

Aquados - The Castleford-based manufacturer was shortlisted for its Simply Laundry product, one of the UK's most popular environmentally friendly branded detergents which uses 100 per cent post-consumer waste for all its packaging.

Acorn Briquettes - The fledgling company, based in Stocksbridge, makes briquettes from hardwood sawdust and shavings to use on wood burners, open fires, chimneys, fire pits and barbecues.

Bolsita - Based in York, the company uses recycled and reclaimed fabrics, such as old curtains and clothing, to produce individually designed retail bags for life.

Lindum Seeded Turf - The company, based at Thorganby near York, manufactures the Wildflower Green Roof Mat - a ready-to-roll-out instant vegetation layer which allows living plants to grow on roof structures.

Innovation

Greenbagtag - Created by Globalbagtag, the Filey-based internet baggage tracking company, this service allows travellers to collect carbon credits for short, medium or long-term travel.

Meadowhall - The Sheffield shopping centre harvests rainwater for cleaning, flushing toilets and watering its external landscaping areas.

Standby Saver - Developed by Chesterfield-based Ecotek UK, this device prevents energy being wasted while electrical appliances are on standby.

Yorkshire Air Museum - The York museum is one of only eight establishments in the UK to trial a system that composts normal organic waste but also meat waste and certain types of non-treated paper.

Community Award

Heaton Woods Trust - The community trust was shortlisted for its work establishing a 10-hectare recreational and wildlife woodland only two miles from Bradford city centre.

Settle Hydro - Yorkshire's first community-owned hydro-electricity scheme has raised 100,000 in a share issue and found match funding to produce a profitable business model.

Climate Change

Silvapower - The Doncaster-based company is Yorkshire's leading producer and supplier of fuel-grade woodchip, which helps to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent compared with fossil fuels.

United Bank of Carbon - Founded by Betty's and Taylors of Harrogate, this start-up company has developed a brokerage which enables businesses to fund rainforest protection projects. It is already working to protect a piece of land in Peru - now known as the Yorkshire Rainforest.

Built Environment: Projects over 1m

Brompton Lakes - This development of 10 environmentally friendly lodge-style holiday homes on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park features sustainable and economical construction techniques and promotes green living.

York Eco Business Centre - The centre at Clifton Moor provides affordable accommodation for start-up businesses, features ground-source heating, harvests rainwater for reuse and has its own wind turbine, which provides some of the building's electrical power.

Built Environments: Projects under 1m

Energytek - The small family-run building company, based in York, designed and built two low-energy four-bedroom homes inspired by the zero-carbon German "passive house" ethos. The homes have increased insulation, recovered heat and air source heat pumps.

Eco Hoardings - The Huddersfield-based company supplies and installs hoardings systems made from recycled and reused plastics, PVC, steel and concrete to replace the wasteful use of wood, nails and paint on construction sites.

Countryside Award

Hassacarr Nature Reserve - The nature reserve, at Dunnington, used to consist of disused railway land, an unwanted sewage works and a neglected ancient pond, but now volunteers have cleaned it up and made it a magnet for wildlife and school visits.

Levisham Moor Group - Members of the British Falconers Club who are managing, protecting and restoring a once-neglected 3,500-acre patch of heather moorland within the North York Moors National Park.
