Sign up now, Jane runners urged

ANYONE wishing to take part in next month's Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10K is being encouraged to sign up quickly.

More than 10,000 people are already taking part in the run, set up in memory of Mrs Tomlinson who died in 2007, and there are less than 1,000 places left.

Earlier this week, the Yorkshire Post revealed that Ashes to Ashes star Dean Andrews, who plays Det Sgt Ray Carling in the popular TV drama, had joined the growing list of competitors.

The Rotherham-born actor is running for Sparks, Sport Aiding Medical Research for Kids, a charity dedicated to funding research into childhood diseases.

He is taking part in the event to support George's Appeal, a campaign to raise 2m for research into the childhood cancer neuroblastoma.

George's Appeal was recently launched by the Sparks charity – a partner charity of Jane's Appeal.

The appeal is named after nine-year-old George Yeomans, who lost his battle with the disease last year and who had himself led a campaign to raise awareness about neuroblastoma and the desperate need for more research funding.

To date, Sparks has committed a total of more than 11m towards medical research projects across a wide range of conditions affecting babies and young children, including childhood cancers, meningitis, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, infant brain damage and premature birth.

The Yorkshire Post is a media partner for Jane Tomlinson's Leeds 10k run which takes place on June 21.
