Snooker player's family run for cancer charity

Andrew Robinson THE family of cancer-stricken snooker star Paul Hunter ran a half marathon to raise funds and awareness of a rare form of the disease.

The player's wife Lyndsey, her sister Leanne Morris and his cousin Tony Roberts were among several family members who ran the Leeds Half Marathon yesterday.

The 27-year-old player recently started a 16-week course of chemotherapy for neuroendocrine tumours, a rare form of cancer that

usually occurs in the digestive system.

Hunter, a father of one, from Upper Batley, West Yorkshire, suffers pain in his side most days and has been battling cancer for over a year.

He said recently that his condition was worse than it was a year ago and that the current treatment was aimed at first shrinking the tumours before the next step could be taken.

Lyndsey's sister Leanne Morris, cousin Joanne Walker and sister-in-law Tracy Smith all ran the half marathon, raising money for the NET Patient Foundation incorporating Living with Carcinoid.

A total of 6,000 people took part in the event or the two-mile fun run, including 97-year-old Mary Cox and 13 other members of the Bramley Elderly Action Group in Leeds.

The race was started by Leeds Lord Mayor Bill Hyde and Coronation Street actor Jack Shepherd, who plays David Platt, appearing

on behalf of the official event charity, PhysCap, a Leeds-based organisation made up entirely of volunteers which has been helping children with physical disabilities in Yorkshire for over 30 years.

n See the Yorkshire Post's Life & Style supplement on Wednesday for a full interview with Lyndsey Hunter.
