South Yorks top cop arrested in fraud swoop
A SENIOR detective with South Yorkshire Police has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and fraud.
Det Ins Shakeel Ahmed was grilled by police along with nine other suspects after a series of raids on homes and businesses on Wednesday morning.
Officers from West Yorkshire Police uncovered 150,000 in cash, a staggering 14 top-of-the-range cars that had been abandoned as well as jewellery and a suspected cannabis farm.
The cars taken included a Maserati, a BMW X5 and a Jaguar XKR.
The operation took place in Agbrig, West Yorkshire, where the senior cop lives, and also nearby Sandal.
DI Paul O'Dowd, from West Yorkshire Police confirmed the items had been seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
"The people were arrested in relation to a money laundering
investigation. Nine men and one woman were taken in for questioning.
"We are keen to hear from anyone who appears to be involved in crime and living a lifestyle which is clearly beyond their means."
Det Chief Insp Andy Williams, Wakefield district division crime manager, said: "The local neighbourhood police team are currently conducting follow-up inquiries and reassurance patrols in the area.
"Feedback we have received from the local community has been very positive so far. I would still urge members of the public to contact us if they know of anyone who is profiting from illegal activity."
South Yorkshire Police refused to comment on Det Ins Ahmed's arrest.
All the suspects have now been released on bail pending further inquiries and the investigation is continuing.
