Sports quiz to celebrate 40th anniversary

Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell will be faced with their former selves when their first appearances on A Question of Sport are broadcast to celebrate the show's 40th birthday in the New Year.

The BBC said the two team captains will look back to the first appearances they made on the programme as contestants – "dodgy haircuts and all" – and they will also try to answer their original home questions.

A Question of Sport celebrates its 40th birthday in January 2010 – making it the longest-running and most popular sports quiz in British TV history.

Some of the biggest sporting names have appeared on the programme since its early days and joining the milestone birthday bash on Friday, January 8, are Michael Johnson, Laura Davies, Pat Cash and David Coulthard.

Regular rounds will feature alongside a blend of archive material and nostalgia capturing the best bits from the last four decades.

The show is just past its 890th episode and in its 39th series – and it still pulls in an audience of around 3.6 million viewers.

The first A Question of Sport aired on January 5, 1970, and was hosted by David Vine.
