Star backs campaign to tackle hunger

Pop star Jamelia is backing a new campaign urging schoolchildren to help combat hunger in the developing world.

The initiative will call on pupils across England to donate 10p each time they have a school lunch to provide some of the world's poorest children with a nutritious meal.

All of the money raised will go to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to fund school meals for children enrolled in their school feeding programmes in countries including Cambodia, Kenya and Guatemala.

Last week Jamelia visited Nairobi to see the work of the WFP and where the money raised from the Really Good School Dinner programme will be spent.

The singer said: "When I grew up we were always told how lucky we were to have a meal on the table.

"This campaign brings that home because by giving an extra 10p, when children empty their own plate in England, they will be helping to fill another in the developing world.

"In Nairobi I saw what a difference each 10p donated will make. Some of the children I met wouldn't have anything to eat if it weren't for WFP. School pupils in England can make a real difference for children just like them but born into a world where regular meals can't be taken for granted."

It is hoped that thousands of children will benefit from the initiative.

The WFP already provides meals to around 20 million children, and it has school feeding programmes in 70 countries.

The campaign, by the WFP and the School Food Trust, will run from January 26-30 and children will be asked to make donations during that time.

A website, www.getreal.uk.com/really-good-school-dinner, has been set up to allow pupils to pledge money.

Children will be able to see how their school's pledges compares to others across the country, and watch video footage of how their donations will help children in Kenya.
