Start soon on £12m disease centre
SPECIALIST building contractors will begin work on a new research centre in Sheffield tomorrow which will make the city a world leader in research into motor neurone disease.
International construction firm ISG, which has an office in Bradford, will carry out the 12m project, in Dorset Street, which will become home to a state-of-the-art centre.
The building will be called the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) and it will be run by staff from Sheffield University, which has partly funded the project.
It is hoped the centre will bring together scientists and medical specialists from around the globe who are dedicated to finding a cure for the debilitating and deadly condition.
A spokesman for the university said staff at the centre would also be dedicating time to working on cures for other degenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Multiple Sclerosis.
Further funding from the project has come from the Sheffield Institute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease, which was set up by a concerned group of patrons who wanted to help create the institute.
A ceremony to mark the start of work on the building will take place at the site tomorrow at 10.45am and will be attended by vice chancellor of Sheffield University Keith Burnett.
Members of the Sheffield Institute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease will also be in attendance, alongside Professor Pamela Shaw, an international expert in the disease, who has been appointed head of the centre.
Speaking last December Prof Shaw said: "I believe that the creation of the institute will enable us to assemble the manpower and funding needed to generate much more effective therapies for patients with MND."
