Station to improve disabled access

Lucy Harvey A £2m project to make Doncaster railway station accessible for disabled people is under way.

The improvement works will include installing 16-person lifts to improve access to the platforms which are used by 12,000 passengers everyday.

Until now wheelchair users have been forced to use the goods lift.

Andy Hendry, of the Doncaster Disabled People's Alliance, said: "I think everybody who has ever had to use the goods lift at the station will be over the moon to know that new lifts are on their way.

"The changes at the station are coming just at the right time and travelling to and from Doncaster from next summer, particularly for disabled people, will be a far more convenient and pleasant experience."

The work, being carried out in partnership between the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, GNER and Doncaster Council, will also include renovating the subway under the platforms and all staircases.

Roy Wicks, director general of the SYPTE, said: "The transformation of the station is the last major step in providing a quality integrated transport hub in Doncaster that will improve accessibility for all passengers and encourage more people to leave the car at home in favour of public transport."
