Stepson found guilty of manslaughter

A MAN who stabbed his stepmother to death shortly after police confiscated the alcohol he was drinking in the street has been found guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

A jury found Jason Ferries, 21, not guilty of murder after hearing evidence at Sheffield Crown Court that he had Asperger's syndrome when he killed Susan Ferries, 33.

The hearing was told Ferries had been drinking in Mexborough before setting out for his father's flat in Wath Road. On the way he was challenged by police community support officers, who took away a bottle of beer he was drinking.

At the flat he complained about the incident then picked up a knife and stabbed his victim.

Judge Roger Keen adjourned sentencing for reports to assess the public danger posed by Ferries.

Peter Birkett QC, defending, said the defendant had stopped taking the drug Ritalin to control his hyperactivity disorder when he was 16 after he tried to join the Army.

He had resumed medication while on remand for stabbing his stepmother and his condition had improved.
