Students watch road-crash drama

MORE than 200 students have been among the first to benefit from a scheme by North Yorkshire County Council to bring the tragedy of road accidents to the stage.

Members of Scarborough's Yorkshire Coast College attended a performance organised through the authority's Traffic Management and Road Safety Group to highlight dangers such as speeding, and general attitudes of novice motorists.

The drama, called Legal Weapon, by North Yorkshire County Council's Theatre group, shows how a young college couple's lives are turned upside down when a college student is jailed for killing a moped-driver in a high-speed crash.

The production was then followed by an interactive workshop session, which underlined how young motorists can be egged on by their peers to behave foolishly.

Jan Rhodes, Student Welfare and Liaison Co-ordinator, said yesterday: "More and more young people are involved in collisions than they should be – some of which are critical. "The welfare of our students is paramount. We aim to try and raise awareness of the dangers which our students could be exposed to on our roads."
