Success for webcasts of authorities' meetings
THOUSANDS of people have logged on to view the meetings of South Yorkshire Joint Authorities – and the success of the service means it will now be available for a further three years.
Since the webcast was launched in 2007 there have been more than 13,000 viewings of meetings, and just over 1,000 visits to watch the meetings live.
South Yorkshire Joint Secretariat are leading the way in "online meetings". They were the first public authority in South Yorkshire to provide live webcasts of their principal meetings.
The Joint Authorities comprise the Police Authority, Fire and Rescue Authority Integrated Transport Authority and the Pensions Authority.
Bill Wilkinson, clerk and treasurer of South Yorkshire Joint Secretariat, said: "The webcasting of our meetings has proved a huge success and we are thrilled to have extended the contract for a further three years.
"The service has essentially provided stakeholders with a platform informing them of the day to day work and the major decisions made by the authorities and to increase accessibility for local communities."
The authorities hosted an open day to showcase their successful use of webcasts to local organisations and public sector bodies.
This was attended by representatives from more than 20 authorities in Northern England, with a number of others viewing online.
Mr Wilkinson added: "Webcasting means that members of the public, as well as journalists, can access the meetings at a time that suits them. They are also able to select specific sections of the meeting that are relevant or of interest to them which can be viewed live by video online or through an archive system."
