Super-size Christmas decoration for city's famous Georgian house
KEEPING of Christmas has become an annual tradition at Fairfax House in York.
This year international flower arranger George Smith has been commissioned to create a three-tiered floral Christmas tribute to the finest Georgian town house in England.
The period-inspired decoration consists of three separate wreaths in diminishing sizes, decorated with white silk roses, handmade tiny flowers and Christmas foliage and stands 3ft 6ins tall. It will become part of the Fairfax House Christmas collection and York Civic Trust intends to commission a new Georgian-inspired decoration each year from a local artist to add a contemporary twist to its Georgian Christmas.
The Keeping of Christmas exhibition runs at Fairfax House from December 1 to 31, except December 24, 25 and 26, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the Fairfax family's 18th century country landowner's Christmas.
York Civic Trust director Peter Brown said: "Lord Fairfax and his daughter were generous hosts during the winter season, renowned for the quality of their table and cellar.
"We want our visitors to have a flavour of their festivities by giving the look of rooms 'holding their breath' for the celebration of Christmas to begin."
