Tankards raised for taste of Civil War
CAVALIERS and Roundheads will be raising their tankards in Treeton, Rotherham, this weekend to sup a new ale specially brewed to commemorate the village's role in history.
The "Robin's Vindication" ale will be launched at the opening of a two-day historical re-enactment event, the Battle of Treeton, which will see hundreds of Sealed Knot Society members joining a living history camp on Treeton Field in Washfield Lane and staging full-scale battle re-enactments.
Robin's Vindication is named partly in memory of Treeton History Group's chairman Robin Carter, who died recently, and partly after the Ploughman's Vindication – an infamous pamphlet written in Treeton by puritans calling for removal of their royalist vicar in 1644.
Andrew Roddison, a member of Treeton Local History Group, said: "Robin was incredibly enthusiastic about local history and this living history weekend was his idea. It's only sad he won't be here to see it.
"However, the weekend will go ahead exactly as planned and his family will be there on Friday to pull the first pint of Robin's Vindication."
The two-day event is free and will combine family entertainment with a chance to find out about life in the 17th century.
Visitors can wander around the living history camp, talk to royalists and parliamentarians and see how people lived during the English Civil War.
The camp is open from 10.30am to 5pm tomorrow and from 10.30am to 4pm on Sunday. Two staged battles will be held by the Marquess of Newcastle's Regiment of Foote, at 3pm tomorrow and at 2.30pm on Sunday. There will also be children's entertainment and refreshments, including a real ale marquee run by Robinson's brewery.
The Sealed Knot, an English Civil War re-enactment society, was formed in 1968 and was granted official recognition as a registered charity six years later.
Over the years the society has performed re-enactments throughout the country, including at the Silver Jubilee celebrations at Windsor Castle in 1977.
