Tarantula in supermarket grapes

A man found a tarantula in a bunch of grapes he bought at a supermarket.

Kevin Hudson, 40, of Elmswell, Suffolk, discovered the 5cm creature after a shopping trip to Asda, in nearby Stowmarket.

"I was washing some grapes for my four-year-old son when it crawled out," said Mr Hudson, a commercial director of a building firm. "I was a little bit shocked. Spiders don't bother me too much, although it would have been a different story if my wife had been washing them."

Mr Hudson said he captured the tarantula in a plastic box and took it to a vet to be identified. It has since been taken to a local reptile centre.

Asda is investigating. A spokeswoman said: "We sell over 30 million bags of grapes a year and we have never had a tarantula reported in a bunch.

"It's highly unlikely that a spider of this size could have hitched a ride as we have strict procedures in place to stop this sort of thing from happening. Naturally if this has caused the customer any distress we are of course very sorry."
