Teaching assistant loses Muslim veil appeal
A MUSLIM teaching assistant from West Yorkshire has lost her appeal against an employment tribunal's decision that not being allowed to wear a full veil at work was discrimination.
Aisha Azmi was dismissed in November from Headfield CofE Junior School, in Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury, weeks after her claims of discrimination were dismissed by the tribunal.
The 24-year-old was appointed as a bilingual support worker for the school in September 2005, but was suspended five months later on full pay for refusing to remove her veil in lessons in case a male colleague saw her.
Kirklees Council and the school insisted face-to-face communication was essential to her role, so pupils could understand what she was saying.
The tribunal had dismissed her claims of discrimination and harrassment, but found she had been victimised by the local authority. It awarded her 1,000 in damages, which was later increased to 1,100 for the failure to follow statutory grievance procedures.
