Teenager held over sex attack on 86 year-old woman in her care home
DETECTIVES investigating the rape of an 86-year-old woman at a Bradford care home have this morning arrested a 19 year-old man.
The teenager, from the Woodside area of Bradford, is being held on suspicion of kidnap, rape and being unlawfully on a premises to commit a sexual act.
The victim was taken to hospital after the attack. She is understood to have physical injuries which are not life threatening.
Police were called to the Springfield care home in Western Way, Buttershaw, early on Tuesday after the alarm was raised at the home.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the victim was being cared for by specially-trained officers and medical professionals.
Officers remained at the home yesterday as West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team continued its investigation, which is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Jon Hoyle.
The home is run by Anchor Homes which is part of Anchor Trust – England's largest not-for profit provider of housing, support and care for older people.
After police were called, a team of forensic officers examined the scene and a police cordon was stretched across a garden at a corner of the building.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "There are a lot of comings and goings all the time, so we weren't aware of any unusual noises. But you wouldn't expect anything untoward happening, what with so many people around. It is very shocking."
Another resident, whose daughter works at the care home, said: "It is very worrying. I can't imagine what the old dears are thinking."
Springfield, which is a registered care home with nursing, was purpose-built and designed to provide nursing and residential care. According to its website the home has "safe, enclosed gardens".
The home, which can accommodate up to 98 residents, has single en-suite rooms with some rooms opening directly onto gardens.
An inspection by the Care Quality Commission in May gave the home a two-star rating, which is classed as a "good service" and means that the people who use the service "experience good quality outcomes".
At the time of the report, the home charged weekly fees ranging from 397 to 650.
